Services - Tax Enquiries and Investigations

Tax enquiries and investigations

For business owners, it's an unavoidable reality that your company may become the subject of a tax enquiry or investigation by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). The same also applies to individuals in respect of their personal tax returns. Such investigations can be initiated by HMRC either completely at random or for specific reasons.

At Balanced Accounting, we've received detailed training on how to handle investigations by HMRC and have previous experience of working on their enquiries. We know how HMRC approaches the process, we know what they are and are not allowed to ask you and we have access to the same internal guidelines manuals as their inspectors.

So if you or your company are unlucky enough to find yourselves the subject of a tax investigation, we're ideally placed to help guide you through the process.

We can accompany you in all meetings with HMRC staff, explaining at each stage how the investigation works and what to expect, whilst also guarding against the possibility of lines being inadvertently crossed.

it's worth mentioning that if you've chosen in advance of events to be covered by our tax enquiry fee protection insurance scheme, all of our fees for dealing with any investigation would be covered by the insurance company.

The old adage that prevention is better than cure also applies to HMRC tax enquiries. Clearly, neither of us can do anything to prevent you becoming the subject of a random enquiry.

However, when submitting returns for our Corporation Tax and Self Assessment clients, we're always on the lookout for points that could potentially trigger an enquiry if not explained at greater length within your initial return.

By addressing such issues at source, we seek to minimise the scope for unnecessary enquiries and their related direct and indirect costs.
